Eaglehawk Autumn Herd Dispersal: Streamlining for Operational Efficiency
At Eaglehawk Angus, we’re always focused on making decisions that enhance the sustainability and productivity of our operation. This year, we’re excited to announce our Autumn Herd Dispersal Sale on February 14 2025, as part of our strategic plan to improve the overall efficiency of our operation.
Why We Are Dispersing Part of Our Herd
As a family owned operation, we pride ourselves on being hands on in every aspect of the business. Our workforce is small, consisting of our dedicated family and one key employee. Together, we manage everything from daily farming and fencing to land development, weed control, and all cattle work.
With a workload this broad, efficiency is crucial. Currently, we run two calving seasons—Autumn and Spring—but after much consideration, we’ve decided to consolidate into one calving period. This change will not only allow us to focus more on data driven decision making and genetic improvement, but also streamline the entire operation to make the best use of our resources.
By running a single calving period, we can put more effort into data collection, performance analysis, and ensuring that our cattle continue to thrive in the conditions they’re raised in. Managing two calving seasons is a complex task, requiring extensive resources, but with the shift to one, we can better monitor and manage the herd’s growth, and ultimately enhance the genetic consistency and performance of our cattle.
Why Focus on One Calving Period?
As a small team, handling two separate calving times across a large operation is a challenge. By focusing on one calving time, we can more efficiently track our calves’ performance, streamline management tasks, and continue improving the genetics of the spring herd.
The advantages of this decision include:
- More efficient use of labor: Less time managing multiple calving periods allows us to focus on key tasks that drive long-term results.
- Better data collection: With all calves born during the same period, we can more accurately assess growth rates, maternal performance, and herd health.
- Optimised cattle management: Streamlining our operations means we can improve the care and performance of both cows and calves.
- Resource allocation: Our small team can put more effort into critical areas such as genetic improvement and animal welfare, ultimately benefiting the operation as a whole.
